Billy Is Here

My grandfather, William Buchanan Power (whom I am named after) passed away in his sleep at 3am on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at the age of 91.

Gramps had recently fallen ill and his heart was only functioning at about 25%. So my father and I flew out to see him, just in case this was it.

He was mostly blind and nearly deaf. They would write things on a white board so he could read them. My father wrote “Billy is here” on a whiteboard. After that he kept saying my name “Billy Billy Billy Billy. Oh Billy! Billy Billy Billy!” as he drifted in and out of consciousness.

For the first 12 years of my life I spent a lot of time with my grandparents at their house in Redondo Beach on Avenue A. My mother had multiple sclerosis and was in a convalescent home. My father worked several jobs to pay for her care and mounting medical expenses. So I would ride the RTD bus across town to school and then walk home to their house.

I swam in their pool. They gave me music lessons. They helped with homework. They loved me very much. They were like my adopted parents. I used their car to drive my date to the prom when I was in high school. Their influence in my life cannot be overstated.

The last words he said to me was “I love you, Billy.” Less than 10 hours later he was finally at rest.

So, in his honor, I’m asking that all friends and family refer to me from this day forward as “Billy.”

Rest in peace, Gramps.

My grandma Margaret is still living and your thoughts and prayers on her behalf during this time of loss are much appreciated.

My Tooth & Nail CD Collection on Ebay!

I finally succeeded in importing this over 700 CD collection into iTunes. I backed it up to a 2 terabyte hard drive and then uploaded everything to Amazon cloud drive. So now I have access to it at any time in any place.

Sure, I could hang on to these and move them yet again to a new house or apartment when we re-locate in June – but I’m getting too old to lug these around.

I hope somebody is able to enjoy them!

Do Good Anyway

The Decoliner

I love Michael, what he built and his philosophy on life and building things:

“Nice things take time. So, the things that inspire me are things like The Sistine Chapel – four generations to build. However long it takes is how long it’s going to take. And it’s going to be the best that I can build it. It may not be the best that it could ever be, but it’s the best that I can built it. I take a lot of pride in my craftsmanship. And I really try to take the time to create nice things – and take the time to do things right. Because that seems to be a lost art in the world that we live in today. – Michael Leeds”

Just watch it.

Also, check out these photos to get a full appreciation of the work that was involved to create this rolling piece of art!

A Manifesto

I don’t want to be defined by what I am against.

The world has become overrun with negative, polarizing and hyperbolic voices. Sometimes I was one of those voices. I’ve often prided (oops) myself throughout my life for being a “straight shooter.” I’m the type of person who says what he thinks, often without thinking. Oh, the irony. As I’ve gotten older I’ve tried to become more contemplative and empathetic. So, I thought it would be helpful to lay out a few ideas on how to accomplish this:

Think before speaking.

Stay silent when necessary.

Encourage the best in everyone.

Keep it simple.

You can help me out by also being an encouragement to everyone, everywhere, all the time.

Create. Do. Learn. Live. Like. Love.

Onward & Upward!

Happy Valentines Day

I love you. Thanks for stopping by.
